Island In the Sun, #380

Standard

It’s been Hawaii week at camp this week, and besides being able to play a  couple of songs on my ukulele (which I love!!!!), I also taught the song “Island in the Sun” by Weezer.  I thought it was completely adorable when a few of the campers expressed joyfully how much they love Weezer and that they already knew the song.  I’ll tell you, we have some pretty cool parents at our camp, and it is a pleasure to get to know them.  Way to go, parents, for getting your kids into this rad band.

It’s been so much fun learning and playing this song this week, and for any of my guitar-playing friends the chords are so simple:  Em, Am, D, G.  Being female, I capo on the 5th fret, but I know most males could sing this song sans capo.  Go for it, rock stars….this is such a fun song to play!

The song is a bit bittersweet for me knowing that bassist Mikey Welsh died less than a year ago.  I actually wrote about him last October feeling the loss of a great musician.  Here’s the link to that blog and  to read a little more about Mikey:  https://tucsonsongstress.wordpress.com/2011/10/10/weezer-hash-pipe/

Regardless, I like playing this song, and simply, it makes me happy.  To spread a little of the happiness to all of you, listen to “Island in the Sun” today.  There’s nothing like a little island sunshine to make a gal smile.  Hope this song does it for you, too. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C3zgYW_FAM&ob=av2e  Happy Friday, everyone.

About tucsonsongstress

I am a music teacher for children ages 6-weeks-old - 8th grade. I am also a camp songleader and a Jewish music specialist with and without my husband who is known as Shabbat Scott. We love singing with people of all ages all over Tucson. My "song of the day" idea originally started by playing music challenges on Facebook. I loved choosing songs, and my friends seemed to love reading and listening to my choices. I have decided to continue a daily blog (or as daily as I can manage) and tell you all some stories through some songs that have touched me either in wonderful ways or by annoying the heck out of me. Hope you all enjoy this blog! Happy singing!
