Family movie night is a special treat in my house. We pop a family friendly movie into the DVD player, all crawl into bed and hopefully watch enthralled for a couple of hours. It’s got to be an awesome movie to maintain my 5-year-old’s attention though, because once he starts getting antsy…forget about it! Family movie night doesn’t happen as often as it should, so no matter the film or my son’s attention span, it is just plain fun to do.
Last night we watched the movie “We Bought a Zoo” with Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. The movie had flaws and definitely was not a perfect film, but it really didn’t matter. It was just so nice to spend a moment with my family and take a break from our busy lives. Even though the concept of the film was sweet (a family grieving the loss of their mother/wife comes together after moving to a new house on the grounds of a zoo that needs lots of work and effort), to me, the movie could have been about any subject matter. The point is, it felt really good to do something together as a family. Besides meal time, our time together as a foursome is few and far between. How lovely to do something spontaneous midweek. I love my family and can never lose sight of this!
It may seem funny that my song of the day is “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty when I’m writing about spending more time together, but the song is part of the “We Bought a Zoo” soundtrack. I was so impressed with my 7-year-old daughter when she noticed the song and expressed how much she liked it while we were watching the movie. Yay! My kiddo likes something cool! It was such a nice break from her usual Katy Perry/Step It Up/One Direction bubble gum pop, and so, I am thrilled to present it to all of you as my song of the day. Blog readers, my daughter has some good taste! Check out Tom Petty’s clever “Alice In Wonderland” inspired video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0JvF9vpqx8. May it inspire you all to spend some good quality time with your family, and maybe you, too, will discover something cool about your kid!
