Ooh Aah Maccabia, y’all!!!!!!!! Many of you have no idea what I am talking about, but for those of you in the know, you know I am talking about several days of spirit and energy and fun. At my Jewish summer camp “Maccabia” is what we refer to as 3 days of camper and staff teams divided up into colors. Other camps call it “color war,” and I have to tell you, these three days make me so nostalgic to memories of when I was a camper.
We called the 3 days “Yom Sport” at my camp when I was a kid, and it was always the highlight of the summer for me. I am such a non-competitive person (except when playing Scrabble…watch out, all you challengers!) and really lousy at all sports, but this was the one competitive thing I ever got involved in. There were competitions (mostly silly) for every skill level. Of course, I rocked on any challenge that was musical, and I really do kick butt on the egg & spoon race, too! Seriously, if egg & spoon was an Olympic event, I’d be Team USA all the way!
Now I am involved in “Maccabia” in other capacities. I have one kiddo on the white team and one on the yellow team. I ran to the dollar store last night to get them decked out in their colors in a zany kind of a way. There are fake flowers in their team colors to give to the judges to butter them up for points. There’s white tinsel and pirates and ribbon and yellow necklaces, glow wand and shoelaces! My kids are going to be loaded up with spirit.
I also get to be a judge. I am leading the musical event, of course, on Thursday afternoon, and I can’t wait to be a part of my one Maccabia activity. I love watching the creativity of the campers and staff, and it really is a very positive charge to be around them all during these 3 days.
So, as an ode to this magical time at camp, my song of the day is Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.” Show me your “true colors” campers, and maybe I’ll give you some spirit points! Enjoy the song and have an awesome time you’ll never forget and will carry with you throughout your life! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPn0KFlbqX8
