My kids are currently on Fall Break from their school, and as I watch them happily enjoy two days of “school days out” programs, I can’t help but wonder to myself, “What in the heck is Fall Break?” I know for sure that I didn’t get 2 days off in October when I was a kid, so how did this holiday come to be?
The way it works in our school district is that the children go to school for 3 half-days at the beginning of the week, so the teachers can have parent/teacher conferences in the afternoon. Then, after these 3 days, the school closes entirely for 2 days of Fall Break. When we were kids, the teachers had their parent/teacher conferences at night-time AFTER school was out. I’m sure it was a tiring week for the teachers, but that was the way it was done. There was no Fall Break!
The other large school district in Tucson changed their Fall Break schedule this year. They went back to school a week earlier this summer, so they could take a full week off for Fall Break. What is the reason for this? I guess I just don’t understand why it is so necessary to have created this week of vacation when kids and teachers have only been in school for 2 months. Did everyone forget that school is about to be closed for Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving Break and then 2 weeks of Winter Break?
I may sound like a cranky task master to all of you today, but I just can’t understand the need of this new holiday. By October, neither of my kids are suffering from school burn out yet, and I just can’t think of any other profession that would create a holiday after only two months of work either. So what gives? Why a Fall Break? If you have some amazing wisdom that you’d like to share with me, by all means, please comment on this post. Maybe there is something I am missing, and I’d love to have my mind changed over this seemingly worthless holiday.
My song of the day is for sure, the best one ever written about the Fall. I love Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” so why not bring some beauty to this pointless holiday? Neil Young is such an excellent song writer, and I love the simplicity of his melodies mixed with the complexity of his lyrics. Click HERE to check out “Harvest Moon” on Youtube, as listening to this song is the only Fall Break the rest of the world outside of school systems is going to get. This song certainly will take you away for a moment, so enjoy, and have a great holiday!
