My kids have been on a basketball league since September, and yesterday was the final game. The leagues start back up again in January, but all the kids will be on new teams.
I have really loved this experience for them. The beauty of a basketball league for young children is the whole concept of learning how to work together as a team and to get a little bit of exercise at the same time. I’m not the kind of parent who cares if my kids win or lose. To me, there are so many more valuable lessons than that.
At the conclusion of their final game yesterday, all the children received participation trophies. My kids were so immensely proud to receive a trophy for their efforts, and they were just glowing for the rest of the afternoon. They earned those trophies fair and square, and I know it is something that they will treasure.
In my whole life, I never received a trophy once for anything. Other kids had them on shelves in their rooms, and I would eye them with envy. I am so excited that my kids have one for their very own, and that it is something meaningful for them. Here they are…with their trophies and with their team. Way to go to all of these darling children for a job well done this semester! These kids rock!
My song of the day is “The Winner Takes it All” by Abba. To me, all of these kids really truly are winners. Technically, this team only won one game during their three months together, but they worked hard, and I’m proud of each and every one of them. They walk away with new knowledge on how to work together, and it is true that “the winner” really does take it all.
