Moving Out, #554

298542_2493664068111_2098949625_nSubconsciously, I think my husband and I are raising little musicians.  For those of you who know us, I can almost hear a big “DUH!!!” spreading across Tucson and beyond right now.  We are both musicians ourselves and lead a very musical life.  It seems obvious that our children would follow in our footsteps.  Besides a few guitar lessons, however, they have never really had any formal musical training.

When my son was 2-years-old, we bought him his own drum set for his birthday present.  Yes, a little extravagant for a 2-year-old you may be thinking, but you should hear how good my son is at keeping a beat.  My husband swears up and down that this is his true calling and talent.  We’ve tried pushing him to get drum lessons, but he hasn’t really shown an interest.  After playing along to a Led Zeppelin track yesterday though, he was pretty pleased with himself.  Perhaps this is the year he will embrace his abilities!

My daughter is a singer and performer.  When my husband sits down at the piano and plays pop music, she will sing along with every lyric memorized.  She does so with a sparkle in her eye, and I love that she is always singing and humming to every tune that comes on the radio, too.  It warms my heart to hear her sing!

My children’s musical talents struck me last night when my husband sat down to play some piano.  When he finally got up and walked away, my son sat down at the piano bench.  He played the notes so carefully and with feeling,.  I spied him a few minutes later lying on our kitchen floor writing on paper.  When he was finished, he ran back to the piano with his paper.  Here is what he wrote:

Sheet Music

Wow!  He can barely write his letters, and yet, he was inspired to try to write sheet music!  He calls this piece “Cookie Monster.”  Can you just feel the pride emanating from me through the computer screen right now?  Yes, I am sure of it.  We are raising little musicians, and I am overflowing with pride!

My song of the day is the one of the ones my husband was playing last night as my son played along on the electric guitar and my daughter danced and sang in the background.  I love when my hubby plays Billy Joel music, and “Moving Out” is a great song, so, click HERE to enjoy a live Billy Joel performance of it, and perhaps you can rock out to it with your family, too.

Bottom line…I love my musical family, and you might say that we make beautiful music together!

About tucsonsongstress

I am a music teacher for children ages 6-weeks-old - 8th grade. I am also a camp songleader and a Jewish music specialist with and without my husband who is known as Shabbat Scott. We love singing with people of all ages all over Tucson. My "song of the day" idea originally started by playing music challenges on Facebook. I loved choosing songs, and my friends seemed to love reading and listening to my choices. I have decided to continue a daily blog (or as daily as I can manage) and tell you all some stories through some songs that have touched me either in wonderful ways or by annoying the heck out of me. Hope you all enjoy this blog! Happy singing!
