Here Comes the Boom, #558

I saw a surprisingly good movie yesterday with my family!  This is the first time we have seen a non-animated movie together, and so we picked “PG” at the cheap theatre.  I had never heard of “Here Comes the Boom,” but a plot about saving a music program at a high school through mixed martial arts competitions certainly appealed.  My 6-year-old son had heard of the film and was excited about seeing it.  I was expecting a sleeper film, but walked away from feel-good inspiration.

Actor Kevin James plays a lovable high school teacher who tries to raise money to save his buddy’s music teaching position, played by Henry Winkler.  He finds that teaching a night class for U.S. Citzenship isn’t fitting the bill and resorts to fighting in mixed martial arts competitions knowing that the losers can earn up to $10,000 per fight.  James is endearing, and Winkler’s quirky character adds to the heart of this movie.

The song “Here Comes the Boom” by rapper, Nelly, is used to intimidate opponents and to give the film and the fights lots of energy!  Click HERE to go to Youtube to hear it.  Though the movie has some flaws, it is a surprise hit and  will leave you feeling as upbeat as the song.

Of course, any movie that is written in response to music programs being cut out of curriculum due to lack of funds hits close to home.  It is the reason I began writing my Top 10 Tuesday music activities in hopes that parents can fill in the musical gaps for their children.  Click HERE to read more about Top 10 Tuesdays, and check out this fun film!  Simply…it rocks!
