This coming Thursday marks the 100th day of school for my children. When I was a kid, no one ever made a big deal of the 100th day of school, but nowadays, it’s become a celebration for students all over America.
It seems that Kindergarten classes take most advantage of this new-found holiday, and the 100-day project is one of the biggest ones of the year. Each child needs to create something using 100 of a product. When my daughter was a Kindergarten student, we made 100 flowers in a garden. Check it out. It is one of the few projects we have actually held on to.
My son and I actually made a 100-day project when he was a Pre-K student. Check out his 100 ice cream cones:
My son and I will be heading to Michael’s Arts and Crafts later today to pick up materials for his project. He has collected 100 acorns, and we will be making 100 acorns on an oak tree. I am sure this project will take several days to complete, and I promise to post pictures when we finish it up.
I love working on projects with my kids. There is such a fine balance of finding a way to incorporate them doing the work. My daughter made every single one of the flowers that went into her 100-day garden. It took her days to attach the stickers to the toothpicks, and she was so proud of her accomplishment. My son glued all the pom-poms and cones onto his ice cream cone project, and he was filled with pride when he brought it into his class to share with his teachers.
My son will be making 10 leaves for the oak tree and will be gluing 10 acorns into each leaf. I think he will also help me make the tree trunk, but I have not figured out all of the details yet. It is, for sure, a work in progress.
We give these projects 100% of ourselves, which is why my song of the day is “100%” by Sonic Youth. I’ve always admired Sonic Youth for their attitude and pure rock and roll, so as we head into this new 100-day adventure, we will do so with a little bit of Sonic Youth. Click HERE to go to Youtube to hear the song, and good luck to all of the other parents working on the 100 days projects! Enjoy your time bonding with your kiddo. That time is precious.
*****UPDATE: We did it!!! We completed the 100 acorns for the 100th day of school! Check it out:
