The Harlem Shake, #644

What in the world makes a trend…a trend?  I just can’t even imagine how some trends get started.  Take this one for instance:

The accent nail.

I love this trend.  Why should all nails be painted the same after all?  What I want to know though is who thought it up and how did it get started?  According to my online research, “the accent nail” first became popular on runways when models were wearing jewels on the one ring finger nail.  Somehow, the everyday manicure customer just started painting one nail a different hue.

“The Harlem Shake” is another crazy trend.  According to the UK’s publication, “The Independent,” here’s the origin of “The Harlem Shake:”

…the Harlem Shake becoming an internet phenomenon, watched by more than 700 million people around the world in just one month. On 2 February, the first comedy video featuring five Australian teenagers dancing wildly around a room to a track called “Harlem Shake” was uploaded to the video-sharing site YouTube.

Today, I am raising my glass to out-of-the-box thinkers who maybe, by accident, create instant sensations.  By luck and innovation, these people have made some sort of dent in our everyday molds, and crazy or not….I love them.  That is why my song of the day is none other than “The Harlem Shake.”  Click HERE to watch the “Top 10” best Harlem Shake videos ever made.  Here today and probably gone tomorrow…but something we will never forget that has gone down as part of our pop culture.

About tucsonsongstress

I am a music teacher for children ages 6-weeks-old - 8th grade. I am also a camp songleader and a Jewish music specialist with and without my husband who is known as Shabbat Scott. We love singing with people of all ages all over Tucson. My "song of the day" idea originally started by playing music challenges on Facebook. I loved choosing songs, and my friends seemed to love reading and listening to my choices. I have decided to continue a daily blog (or as daily as I can manage) and tell you all some stories through some songs that have touched me either in wonderful ways or by annoying the heck out of me. Hope you all enjoy this blog! Happy singing!
