I went to check on my kids yesterday during the day, as they are in the middle of Maccabia at camp. Maccabia is an Israeli tradition and is a color war Olympic-style games competition. When I approached my son, he was so excited he could barely get the words out.
With huge wide eyes and a Vulcan grip on my hand….”Mommy!!!! You won’t believe it! I’m the team mascot!!!”
You could clearly see….this was a title he held with great pride and honor. He had found a place of importance, and he was relishing every moment if it. Way to go, team counselors, for recognizing that giving my son that position on the team assured his buy in and great attitude. He is sold and is Team Blue all the way!
When I picked him up at the end of the day, he talked a mile a minute recounting every moment of his day with excitement. He carefully gathered up his costume and must have tried it on 3 or 4 times last night. I am certain that whether or not his team wins the competition, he won’t care one bit. All he’ll remember is that he was the mascot, and he did something for his team that mattered.
My song of the day is a 70’s rock song by The Raspberries entitled “Overnight Sensation,” because that’s what my son is….at least in his mind, and he is loving every moment.
